Srinagar, Dec 25, KNT: The government has reiterated its resolve to reduce road accidents and fatalities in Jammu and Kashmir by 50 percent by the year 2030, with sustained efforts underway to implement various components of framed road safety policies across the Union Territory.
Official sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that road accidents continue to remain a major concern, claiming hundreds of lives every year and leaving many more injured. Recognising the seriousness of the issue, the administration has been focusing on translating policy provisions into concrete action on the ground to achieve the targeted reduction in accidents and deaths.
Sources said multiple departments are working in coordination to strengthen enforcement of traffic laws, improve road engineering and infrastructure, and identify accident-prone stretches for targeted interventions. Measures are also being taken to address key factors contributing to road mishaps, including over speeding, reckless driving and poor compliance with traffic rules.
The government is simultaneously working to improve post-accident response by strengthening trauma care facilities and ensuring quicker medical assistance to accident victims, especially along highways and in remote areas. Officials said emphasis is also being laid on data-driven planning to monitor accident trends and assess the effectiveness of safety measures.

Public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting responsible road behaviour among drivers, pedestrians and commuters are also being rolled out as part of the broader effort to cut accidents by half by 2030. Authorities said sustained implementation and regular monitoring will be crucial to achieving the long-term road safety target.
The government maintained that reducing road accidents by 50 percent by 2030 remains a priority and that efforts will continue until safer travel conditions are ensured across Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]
