Omar Abdullah Calls for Early Statehood, Stresses Need for Border Peace

“Statehood is essential for restoring confidence among the people and ensuring democratic processes return to full strength,” he said during his address at the event.

 

 

Gurez, August 7, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday reiterated the urgent need for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it vital for the democratic functioning of the region. Speaking at the Tribal Festival held in Chorwan area of Gurez, the Chief Minister noted that the issue is currently under hearing in the Supreme Court and expressed hope that a decision in favour of restoration would come soon.

During his visit, Omar Abdullah also underlined the government’s focus on promoting border tourism to economically uplift youth in remote regions. He said such festivals are part of a larger initiative to develop border areas and integrate them into the tourism and economic framework of the state.

Highlighting the importance of sustained peace along the Line of Control, the Chief Minister said that calm in the border areas is a prerequisite for long-term development and prosperity. He also observed the LoC through a telescope, symbolizing the government’s concern for maintaining vigilance while pursuing peace.

“We are committed to ensuring that peace returns to the borders and that it benefits local communities through economic opportunities,” he added.

Recognizing the communication challenges in remote areas, Abdullah said the government is working to improve mobile connectivity in far-flung villages such as Chorwan.

As part of the event, a cultural program showcasing tribal heritage was held, and certificates were distributed among self-help groups to encourage community-based development.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Advisor to CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Tanvir Sadiq, MLA Gurez Nazir Ahmad Gurezi, the Secretary of the Tribal Affairs Department, and several officials from the civil administration. [KNT]
