Uri authorities issue flood advisory as Jhelum swells


Baramulla, Sept 6, KNT: Authorities in Uri subdivision of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday issued an urgent public advisory after a sharp rise in the water level of the Jhelum river, warning residents of possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Officials said the river is currently flowing at around 630 Cumecs and is expected to swell further in the coming hours, posing a potential threat to low-lying habitations.
In its advisory, the administration strictly prohibited public movement near the Jhelum and other water bodies. “Residents living in vulnerable and low-lying areas must remain on high alert and adopt precautionary measures.

Citizens are advised to stay indoors, remain attentive to official warnings, and in case of emergencies, dial 112 immediately,” the statement said.
Authorities added that all concerned departments have been directed to remain on maximum alert and ensure full readiness to deal with any emergent situation.
The fresh advisory comes at a time when several parts of Kashmir are already dealing with inundation and damages caused by recent heavy rains and breaches in embankments. [KNT]
