Gumri Avalanche: Six people rescued, vehicles retrieved

At least six persons including five drivers have been rescued after a massive snow avalanche hit five vehicles yesterday near Shaitan Nallah Gumri area of Drass Kargil.

SSP Kargil Inayatullah Chowdary told news agency Kashmir News Trust that five vehicles including four trucks were laden with fruits and vegetables when they came under an avalanche. The eatables were destroyed and vehicles too suffered damages.

Police and the army rushed to the spot and rescued at least 6 persons beneath the snow. “We provided critical and timely assistance, rescuing six persons. They were given immediate medical aid and their vehicles were retrieved from the snow as well,” the army said.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has issued an avalanche warning for 4 districts in the next 24 hours.

The state disaster management authority said that a ‘low danger level’ avalanche is likely to occur above 3200 to 3500 meters above sea level over Doda, Kishtwar, Bandipora, and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours. The people living in these areas are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas for safety purposes till further orders, the SDMA said. [KNT]
