Soldier killed in LoC gunbattle in J&K’s Baramulla

Srinagar, Aug 13, KNT: A soldier was killed in a gunbattle along the Line of Control in Churanda village of Uri sector in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the second such fatal incident in the Valley this week.

Police sources said the exchange of fire was “brief but intense” though it was not immediately clear whether it was an infiltration attempt or an attack by a Border Action Team.

Earlier this week, two soldiers were killed during anti-militancy operations in Akhal forests of Kulgam district in South Kashmir. That operation, among the longest in recent years, was called off after 11 days.

Army sources confirmed the latest casualty, saying a counter-infiltration and BAT operation had been launched to track down those responsible.
