Cracking Down on Illegal Sand Mining Continues in Pulwama, Over Rs 1 Crore Fined in Just a Month

Pulwama, July 3, KNT: In a determined bid to protect natural resources and uphold the law, the Geology and Mining Department in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has launched an intensive and sustained campaign against illegal sand mining, and their efforts are now drawing widespread appreciation.
Under the active supervision of the Incharge District Mineral Officer, the department has in the past one month seized scores of vehicles found involved in unauthorized sand extraction and transportation. Officials confirmed to Kashmir News Trust that fines exceeding Rs one crore have been imposed on violators during this period, sending a clear message that illegal mining will not be tolerated.
This renewed push against sand mafia networks has come as a breath of fresh air to law-abiding citizens, who have often complained about environmental degradation and unchecked exploitation of riverbeds. However, sources within the department revealed that certain vested interest groups, rattled by the crackdown, are now spreading misinformation to project that the enforcement drive is faltering. “This is far from reality,” an insider said, adding, “the department is simply applying the law in letter and spirit, and those indulging in illegal acts are being held accountable.”
Officials further noted that legal action is being consistently pursued against anyone found violating mining laws, regardless of influence or position. “The rule is clear, nobody will be spared,” one official asserted. “We are here to protect public resources, and our mineral inspectors are carrying out their duties with integrity and dedication.”
The department’s unflinching resolve has not only tightened the noose around sand smugglers but has also restored a sense of order and accountability in the mining sector in Pulwama. Many locals have hailed the drive as long overdue and have urged the administration to continue supporting the Geology and Mining Department in its crackdown. [KNT]
