Tanvir Sadiq Slams BJP for Disrupting Assembly, Says Cooperative Movement Reduced to a Bureaucratic Exercise for Last Decade

Srinagar, Oct 30, KNT: National Conference legislator and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq on Thursday accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of “indulging in theatrics” by disrupting the proceedings of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and later returning to participate in discussions on the Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill.
Speaking during the debate on the Bill, Sadiq said it was ironic that the same legislators who stalled the House earlier during the Zero Hour through protests and a walkout had returned to resume business as if nothing had happened. “This selective outrage and performative protest have reduced the dignity of the House. The BJP members walked out shouting slogans and now return as if they were never part of the disruption,” he remarked.
Sadiq further said that cooperative societies in Jammu and Kashmir have been systematically weakened over the past decade, leading to loss of public trust and collapse of grassroots financial systems that once empowered local communities. “What was once the backbone of rural development has been allowed to decay through neglect and lack of reform,” he said.
He emphasized that cooperative societies, which once played a critical role in providing credit support, employment, and marketing avenues for artisans and small traders, have suffered due to administrative apathy and political interference. “For ten years, the cooperative movement has been sidelined. Instead of strengthening people’s participation, it has been reduced to a bureaucratic exercise,” Sadiq said.

The MLA called for a comprehensive restructuring of the cooperative sector, ensuring transparency, elected management, and direct accountability to members. “This Bill must not be a cosmetic amendment. It should become a means to revive what was once a people’s movement rooted in collective economic empowerment,” he added. [KNT]
